Australia confirms end of lindane use
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has confirmed that the last remaining use of the organochlorine insecticide/acaricide, lindane, has been cancelled. It was registered for use on pineapples. Lindane was listed as a persistent organic pollutant (POP) under the Stockholm Convention in May 2009 ( Agrow No 567, p 21). That requires national measures to be taken to eliminate production and use of lindane. The Australian government is in the process of ratifying that decision, which is expected to take 12-18 months from the POP listing, the APVMA notes.
