Contentious name change for Indian GMO approval body

The name of the Indian Genetic Engineering Approval Committee has been changed to the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) in an official gazette notification issued on July 22nd. Indian media report that this was a surprise move with even members of the GEAC not aware of it, although the Environment Minister had indicated this in February while making a contentious decision to impose a moratorium on the GEAC approval for commercial cultivation of GM insect-resistant brinjal (aubergines - Agrow No 586, p 20). The action creates uncertainty about the role of the organisation and about commercial approvals of genetically modified crops.
