EFSA issues advice on GMO allergenicity tests

Assessment of the allergenic potential of genetically modified organisms must continue on a weight-of-evidence, case-by-case basis, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). There is no single test to assess the allergenicity of a GM food or feed, it adds. The conclusion comes in new EFSA advice on methods to evaluate the allergenic potential of GM plants and micro-organisms, and derived food and feed. The updated guidance is based on 181 comments received from a public consultation in 2009 ( Agrow No 582, p 10).
