Colombia OKs GM potato trials
Colombia has approved field trials of genetically modified lepidopteran insect-resistant potatoes, Argentine biotechnology newswire Argenbio reports. Colombian University of Medelin’s scientific investigations corporation has been granted the go-ahead to trial potato moth ( Tecia solanivora)-resistant Bt potatoes to develop varieties best suited to national conditions. Potato moths are the major potato pest in South and Central America. Lead researcher Diego Villanueva reportedly claims that a large cut in pesticide applications is the major goal of the developers. The Colombian authorities have added several commercial authorisations of GM crops this year ( Agrow No 597, p 21).
