USDA opens larger inspection site in Florida
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has opened a $25 million plant and seed monitoring station in Miami, Florida. It is aimed at detecting pests and diseases in imported propagating material. The new facility is more than double the size of the previous one, the USDA notes. The Miami site is one of 17 such facilities operated by the APHIS, but it handled nearly 80% of all imported propagating material to the US in 2009.
