EU adds pentachlorobenzene to POPs list
The European Commission has added the fungicide, pentachlorobenzene, to EU rules that prohibit or restrict persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Pentachlorobenzene is a byproduct of industrial processes and appears as an impurity in pesticides and solvents. The decision is in line with the agreement reached by the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on POPs last year ( Agrow No 567, p 21). Other pesticides added by the Parties, including chlordecone and lindane, were already banned or heavily restricted in the EU.
