EU organic area up to 4.3%
The area under organic agriculture in the EU reached 7.6 million ha in 2008, or 4.3% of the total utilised agricultural area in the region, the European Commission says. This compares with 4.3 million ha in 2000. Figures from 2007 show that organic cereals accounted for 1.2 million ha, vegetables for nearly 92,000 ha, and permanent crops for 55,000 ha. The highest proportion of organic farming is in Austria, at 15.5%, followed by levels of 9% or more in Sweden, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Latvia. There were an estimated 197,000 organic farms in the EU, or 1.4% of all EU holdings.
