Dow/KWS in gene targeting pact

Dow AgroSciences has granted the German seed company, KWS Saat (Einbeck), a commercial licence option for its Exzact gene targeting technology for sugar beet. The agreement also grants KWS a research licence for the technology in several row crops. The combination of Dow’s Exzact technology with KWS’s trait development and plant breeding activities is expected to deliver the “next generation” of sugar beet traits, Dow points out. The agreement also lays the foundation for a long-term research relationship on “numerous crops of mutual interest”. Dow has sub-licensed the Exzact technology to several firms since it obtained a licence to Sangamo Biosciences’ zinc finger DNA-binding protein technology in 2008 ( Agrow No 546, p 3).
