Early Mexican GMO trials positive
Initial results of Mexican field trials of genetically modified maize show no indication of risk to human health or the environment, agricultural biotechnology association AgroBio Mexico says. Participating companies report that the first 18 field trials of insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant GM maize have been a success, “demonstrating efficacy in insect and weed control”. Independent researchers from three Mexican universities and research institutes carried out the trials, AgroBio says. One of the lead scientists, Dr José Luis Martínez Carrillo, notes that the technology would be a useful tool for Mexican farmers.
