More questions than answers on EU GM crop proposals

EU member states have raised so many questions about proposals on the cultivation of genetically modified crops that any compromise or consensus is unlikely over the next couple of months, says Belgian Agriculture Minister Sabine Laruelle. Ms Laruelle was speaking after the first discussion among EU Agriculture Ministers about the European Commission’s plan to give member states the freedom to restrict or ban the cultivation of EU-approved GM crops ( Agrow No 596, p 4). The majority of questions concern the possible conflict of the proposals with the EU’s free-trade commitments, both within the EU internal market and under international WTO agreements.
