EU Env Ministers cautiously back GMO blocking plans

Plans to give EU member states the right to block the cultivation of EU-approved genetically modified crops were given a guarded welcome by many EU Environment Ministers at their first discussion of the proposals in October. However, several argued that the proposals should wait until the European Commission implements improvements to the GMO approval process, as originally demanded by the Ministers in 2008. In addition, like their Agriculture counterparts in September ( Agrow No 601, p 9), most Ministers expressed concern over potential conflicts with free-trade obligations.
