Australia OKs Monsanto GM canola trials

The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has concluded that Monsanto’s proposed field tests of genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready 2 canola pose negligible risks to human health or the environment. The company has applied to test the crop on up to 20 sites over four years ( Agrow No 597, p 22). The sites would be no larger than 4 ha in the first year and 10 ha in subsequent years. The canola is expected to tolerate higher rates of glyphosate herbicides and have a wider application window than the original Roundup Ready canola. The OGTR has issued a risk assessment and management plan, which is open to public comment until November 26th.
