USDA assesses hawkweed biocontrol agent
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) proposes issuing permits to allow the release of the first biological control agent to control hawkweeds ( Hieracium spp). The APHIS has prepared an environmental assessment on the proposed release of the hawkweed gall wasp ( Aulacidea subterminalis), which originates from Europe. Existing management options for invasive hawkweeds are ineffective, expensive, temporary or have non-target impacts, the APHIS points out. The environmental assessment is open to public comment until November 22nd.
