France less rigid on pesticide halving target

The French Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bruno le Maire, has indicated that he does not intend to adhere dogmatically to the target of halving pesticide usage in France by 2018, reports French newswire Agrisalon.com. The reduction target has been labelled “Ecophyto 2018” under the government’s environmental initiative, Grenelle de l'Environment, which was set in motion in 2008 ( Agrow No 552, p 13). In a progress report on the initiative by a steering committee, the words, “if possible”, suffixed to the target of halving pesticide usage, is viewed as a shift in stance by the Ministry.
