Soybean area static in Argentina
There is likely to be no significant change in the soybean area in Argentina this season compared with 2009/10, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. It emphasises that the October figures are “premature in determining the eventual coverage”. Preliminary evaluations point to a 2% increase on last year’s 18,340 ha. Planting is under way in five of 24 provinces, including two of the three dominant soybean producers. The survey was carried out in mid-October. The area for major crops fell last year, despite a slight recovery after initial plantings ( Agrow No 581, p 17).
