Endosulfan sparks controversy in India

India’s opposition to the recommendation of the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) review committee to list the organochlorine insecticide/acaricide, endosulfan, on the Stockholm Convention of POPs has been criticised by the Minister of Forests of the southern Indian state of Kerala. The Minister, Binoy Viswam, has reportedly disapproved of India’s stance. The country was among the few dissenting voices in deliberations that led to 24 votes in favour of the recommendation and five abstentions ( Agrow No 602, p 21).
