EU aid requested for bollworm attacks in Greece
The European Commission is considering a request from Greece for help in overcoming cotton losses caused by bollworms ( Helicoverpa armigera). The Greek delegation at the EU Agriculture Ministers’ meeting in October submitted a request for compensation payments for growers. While cotton is a major crop in Greece, it is not included in the EU support system for agricultural products. The bollworm infestation this year has resulted in up to 100% losses in some areas, despite the fact that “farmers scrupulously applied the appropriate pest control methods”, the delegation said. This was primarily because of unfavourable weather during the spraying period. Growers suffered soaring pesticide and production costs, together with a significant drop in output, it added.
