French institute halts GMO research

The French national institute for agricultural research, the INRA (Colmar), has abandoned work on developing new genetically modified crops due to widespread distrust and hostility, reports the newswire,, quoting a Reuters interview. The president of the INRA, Marion Guillou, has been quoted as saying that the institute is limiting its work to assessing or improving GM lines rather than creating new ones. Ms Guillou has expressed her fears that the EU may lag in GMO technology.
