US EPA issues endocrine screening guidance

The US EPA has issued draft guidance for evaluating pesticides undergoing endocrine disruptor screening to determine which should be eligible for further testing. The “weight of evidence” approach will be used to evaluate data submitted as part of Tier 1 screening to identify candidates for Tier 2 testing. The Tier 1 screening battery consists of 11 assays to determine if listed chemicals have the potential to interact with the oestrogen, androgen or thyroid hormonal systems. The EPA began issuing test orders for 58 active ingredients and nine inerts in October 2009 ( Agrow No 578, p 15). The Agency’s draft guidance document is open to public comment until January 3rd 2011.
