USDA proposes GM sugar beet planting

The USDA proposes to allow the commercial cultivation of Monsanto/KWS Saat’s genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready sugar beet under Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) permits. The interim measure would enable the sugar beet to be harvested, processed, stored and sold under certain conditions. The USDA issued its preferred option for public comment this month in response to the companies’ request for a partial deregulation of the GM crop pending the completion of an environmental impact statement as part of the full deregulation process ( Agrow No 602, p 17).
