Australia confirms thiophanate-methyl safety

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has confirmed that the fungicide, thiophanate-methyl, can remain on the market, subject to minor label amendments. Preliminary review findings indicated that the fungicide was unlikely to pose risks to human health ( Agrow No 598, p 34). The APVMA began a review of the benzimidazole fungicides, thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim, in 2007 due to concerns that they could cause the developmental abnormalities in laboratory animals associated with the related fungicide, benomyl ( Agrow No 518, p 16).
