EFSA to monitor new plant health risks
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is to start monitoring for emerging risks affecting plant health in 2011. The work is part of the EFSA’s development and implementation of a system to identify emerging risks related to the food supply chain. To date, the programme has focused on food and feed, including existing data collection on pesticide residues. However, the monitoring will be expanded as part of the EFSA’s work to identify drivers that could impact food and feed production in the future. These include climate change, which may affect the spread of plant pests and diseases, and the use of agrochemicals, the EFSA says.
