Australia OKs GM banana tests
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has concluded that proposed field trials by the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane) on genetically modified disease-resistant bananas pose negligible risk to humans or the environment. The University applied to test 151 GM banana lines on a 1.5 ha site between November 2010 and November 2014. The bananas have been modified with a number of genes from plants, insects, a nematode and a virus ( Agrow No 597, p 22). The OGTR’s risk assessment and management plan is open to public comment until December 8th.
