EU clears Monsanto sunflower deal
The European Commission has cleared Syngenta’s acquisition of Monsanto’s global sunflower seed business, on condition that Monsanto’s sunflower assets are divested in Spain and Hungary. The decision follows an EU investigation into the acquisition, at the request of the two countries’ regulatory authorities ( Agrow No 600, p 13). The investigation confirmed that the acquisition would have removed a “considerable and innovative competitor to Syngenta” in sunflower breeding and commercialisation in Spain and Hungary, the Commission says. However, the investigation was able to dispel the initially identified concerns regarding the shutting out of competitors from the sunflower seed treatment market, it adds.
