GMO support declines across Europe
Genetically modified food is still the “Achilles’ heel” of biotechnology acceptance in Europe, concludes a survey carried out for the European Commission’s Research Directorate-General. While the Eurobarometer survey found growing optimism for biotechnology uses such as crop-based biofuels, it discovered declining support for GM food across many EU member states. On average, opponents outnumbered supporters by three to one, and in no country was there a majority of supporters. Public concerns about safety, together with perceived absence of benefits, mean that opposition to GM food remains entrenched, the authors conclude.
