Paraguay OKs GM maize trials
Paraguay has approved field trials on three genetically modified maize lines. The Ministry of Agriculture has authorised trials: of the glufosinate-tolerant and insect-resistant Herculex RC 1507 maize for Dow AgroSciences and national company Agrotec; to Syngenta for its insect-resistant Bt11; and to Monsanto, for its insect-resistant Genuity VT Triple Pro (MON89034xMON88017) maize. The government amended rules governing the approval process for GMOs last month, according to biotechnology information service Agro-Bio. Applicants will “require an environmental licence” for commercial planting rather than for the trial stage. Paraguay planted 2.2 million ha of GM soybeans in 2009, over 18% down on the previous year ( Agrow No 587, pp 24-25). No GM maize has yet been authorised in Paraguay ( Agrow No 591, p 22).
