EU GM maize approvals delayed
EU member states have again failed to agree on whether or not to accept European Commission proposals to approve genetically modified crops. The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health’s November meeting could not reach the majority votes required to clear: the approval of Monsanto’s insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant MON89034xMON88017 maize for import, processing and use in food and feed; and the renewal of approval for DuPont/Dow AgroSciences’ insect-resistant and glufosinate-tolerant 1507 maize line for feed use, import and processing. Both applications for approval had previously been cleared by the European Food Safety Authority ( Agrow No 589, p 13 and No 570, p 9). The Commission will forward the proposals to EU Ministers for a decision.
