Europeans still concerned about agchem residues
European consumers have no single, widespread concern regarding food, but pesticide residues still feature as the most common issue, reveals a Eurobarometer survey on food-related risks. Among spontaneous responses to food risks, 19% cited chemicals and pesticides as the major concern. When prompted with a list of possible issues, 31% said they were “very worried” about pesticide residues in fruit, vegetables and cereals, compared with 28% in 2005. Residues were the highest concern in 12 member states (nine in 2005). Genetically modified organisms featured in 8% of spontaneous responses, rising to 27% (25% in 2005), when prompted with a list.
