US court orders destruction of GM sugar beet

A US court has ordered the destruction of genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant sugar beet that was planted under USDA permits covering stecklings (seedlings) for seed production in 2010/11. Judge Jeffrey White of the US District Court for the Northern District of California issued a preliminary injunction on November 30th, with an effective date of December 6th. That is the closing date for public comments on the USDA’s proposal to allow broader commercial cultivation of Monsanto/KWS Saat’s Roundup Ready sugar beet under permits ( Agrow No 604, p 15).
