GM aubergine trials destroyed in Philippines
The mayor of the Philippine city of Mindanao has had field trials of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt aubergines destroyed, reports local news service Minda News. Some 1,500 Bt aubergine plants in a trial being conducted by the University of the Philippines (Mindanao) were uprooted in December. The main reason given for the destruction was a failure by the University to conduct consultations with the city over the trials. A city official has been quoted as saying that the mayor had also disputed the University’s assertion that the trials were confined in nature by stressing that they were not “confined enough”.
