EU GMO approvals may require independent tests

Companies wishing to gain EU approvals for genetically modified crops may have to be prepared to supply seed for further independent tests to be carried out, says EU Health and Consumers Commissioner John Dalli. He also wants to see information on the benefits provided by the crop, he told a conference held by the European Parliament’s Alliance for Liberals and Democrats for Europe party in January. The introduction of independent testing is mooted as a way of dealing with concerns raised over a perceived “conflict of interest” within EU bodies involved in GMO evaluations.
