Dow continues battle for trifluralin in EU
Dow AgroSciences is continuing its legal battle to gain EU re-registration for the herbicide, trifluralin. The company, together with Portuguese company Dintec Agroquímica, has applied to the EU courts to overturn a decision last year not to re-register the herbicide ( Agrow No 595, p 7). The companies claim that the European Commission’s concerns over long-range transport failed to take certain data into account, while its conclusions on fish toxicity were not scientifically justified. Dow had re-applied for approval following an earlier EU decision against re-registration in 2007. The company still has an ongoing lawsuit contesting the 2007 outcome, although it lost a bid to have the phase-out of the herbicide suspended until the main lawsuit was resolved ( Agrow No 592, p 11).
