Further essential use of temephos in EU
The European Commission has granted another extension to allow the organophosphate insecticide, temephos, to be used for mosquito control in the French overseas departments until May 14th 2014. EU biocide approvals for temephos were withdrawn in 2006 because it was not supported through the review of existing active ingredients under the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8). However, an exemption for mosquito control was granted and this is the second time it has been extended, due to the continuing absence of alternatives for this particular use ( Agrow No 568, p 10). The French authorities requested the extension, highlighting: the size of recent outbreaks of mosquito-spread epidemics; the need for a range of insecticides to use; the efforts to substitute temephos; and the ongoing research into alternative control methods.
