EU warns three member states on water quality rules
The European Commission has warned Belgium, the Czech Republic and Estonia that it may take them to court if they do not implement new rules on water quality, including pesticide levels. The EU legislation should have been transposed into national law in July 2010. It covers environmental quality standards for surface water and imposes restrictions on 11 pesticides ( Agrow No 546, p 11). The Commission sent a formal notice to the countries last year and has now issued a “reasoned opinion”. If they do not take appropriate action within two months, the matter may be referred to the European Court of Justice.
