Bulgaria bans GM maize cultivation
Bulgaria has banned the cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize, reports Bulgarian newswire Novinite. It becomes the eighth EU member state to do so after Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy and Luxembourg ( Agrow No 589, p 15). The country’s Parliament passed amendments to its GMO Act last year that made the commercial cultivation of GM crops almost impossible ( Agrow No 588, p 12). MON810 is the only GM maize line approved for cultivation in the EU ( Agrow passim).
