Turkish feed producers gain GMO import OKs
The Turkish feed producers’ union, the Türkiyem-Bir, has gained approval of three genetically modified soybean lines for import and use in feed, according to the Black Sea Biotechnology Association, the BSBA. The biosafety commission approved applications for Bayer CropScience’s glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink (A2704-12), Monsanto’s glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready (MON40-3-2) and its Roundup Ready 2 Yield (MON89788) soybeans. It is submitting a “crisis action plan” to the Ministry of Agriculture seeking authorised measures for the shipping of GM crops, their storage, and transportation to processing facilities, English language newspaper Hurriyet/Daily News reports. The country has suffered from feed shortages following a ban on the import GM soybeans. Turkey banned the use of GMOs last year following the introduction of its Biosafety Law ( Agrow No 599, p 11).
