Crop pests on the rise in China

Incidences of plant diseases and insect pests will increase by some 4% to affect 380 million ha of crops across China this year, according to a survey conducted by national agricultural technology promotion centres across the country. The figures, which were issued by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, are based on numbers of wintering pests, crop plantings and weather predictions. China has over 1,700 crop pests, of which over 830 are insects, 720 are diseases, over 60 are weeds, and more than 20 are rodents( Agrow No 603, p 19).
