EU states agree GMO threshold for feed imports

EU member states have finally agreed to allow a 0.1% threshold for the accidental presence of unauthorised genetically modified material in feed imports. The majority vote was achieved after the European Commission strengthened the criteria attached to the new threshold. It modified its proposals after a previous meeting in February indicated member states would block the change to current rules ( Agrow No 610, p 12). Feed imports are currently subject to bans if they are found to contain any traces of GM crops that have not been approved in the EU. The proposed change requires clearance from EU Ministers and the European Parliament before it can go ahead.
