EU confirms decision against methyl bromide
The European Commission has taken a second decision not to re-register the fumigant, methyl bromide. A re-application had been submitted in 2009 by Belgian fumigation company Desclean Belgie after the Commission originally decided against re-registration in 2008 ( Agrow No 572, p 8). EU use ceased in March 2010 as a result of that decision and an acceleration of the EU phase-out of the ozone-depleting ai under the Montreal Protocol ( Agrow No 580, p 16). The applicant proposed to reduce risks by applying recapture technology and limiting use to wood packaging material in containers. However, there were insufficient data to complete the evaluation of exposure to bystanders and risks to non-target organisms, soil and water, and estimate possible air concentrations, the Commission says.
