MEP/Commission clash over criteria for GM crop bans

A European Commission official has rejected calls for EU member states to be allowed to use environmental risks as a reason for banning the cultivation of genetically modified crops. The call is among several actions proposed by French MEP Corinne Lepage, who has produced a draft list of amendments to the Commission’s proposals to give member states the right to block EU-approved GM crops. The Commission remains firm that grounds for banning cultivation must not include environmental or health risks, as these will have already been assessed as part of the EU approval, says Ladislav Mico, the new deputy director-general of the Commission’s Health and Consumers Directorate General, DG SANCO.
