Profoxydim gains EU Annex I listing
BASF’s new rice herbicide, profoxydim, has been granted full EU approval and will be added to Annex I of the EU agrochemical registration Directive on August 1st 2011. The active ingredient received its first three-year provisional approval in Spain, as Aura, in 2001, followed by Bulgaria, Greece, Italy and Portugal. The company originally submitted its application in 1998 and its provisional approvals have had to be extended four times during the EU authorisation process ( Agrow No 592, p 11). EU member states have until January 31st 2013 to change provisional approvals into full approvals. They must consider the protection of ground water and the long-term risk to non-target organisms, and impose risk mitigation measures if necessary.
