Indian parliament to mull biotech authority bill
The Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India Bill is due to be introduced in Parliament in its current session, revealed Indian President Pratibha Patil in her speech to the Parliament. The Indian government’s Department of Biotechnology came up with a draft plan in 2008 ( Agrow No 545, p 21) and final shape to the Bill was given to it at the end of last year ( Agrow No 606, p 23). Additionally, the President mentioned the setting up of the proposed Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council to “augment efforts on food security, promote industrial research and development and facilitate innovation in biotechnology”. The launch of a national crop genetic enhancement network is also in the pipeline.
