Ukraine establishes GMO risk assessment criteria
Ukraine has established criteria for risk assessment of the environmental release of genetically modified organisms, reports the Black Sea Biotechnology Association (BSBA). The criteria, contained in an order of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, entered into force on March 14th. The order should pave the way for commencement of field trials on GM crops. Ukraine accepted the first application for food use of Monsanto’s GM glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans towards the end of 2009, but no other GM crops have yet received such an approval ( Agrow No 611, p 12).
