US wheat storage pesticides surveyed
The grain fumigant insecticide, aluminium phosphide, was the most frequently applied pesticide to stored wheat in 2009/10, according to the latest USDA survey. Aluminium phosphide was applied to 15.5% of stored wheat in the 14 states surveyed. Applications totalled 118,300 lbs (53.7 tonnes), representing 44% of total insecticide use of 267,700 lbs. S-methoprene was the next most widely used insecticide, with 4,800 lbs applied to 2% of stored wheat. Silicon dioxide was the insecticide used in greatest volume (139,100 lbs), but was applied to just 0.3% of stored wheat.
