US EPA seeks comment on iodomethane petition
The US EPA is seeking public comment on a petition calling for all registrations of Arysta LifeScience’s fumigant, iodomethane, to be cancelled. The petition was filed in March 2010 by the law firm, Earthjustice, on behalf of a number of environmentalist and farm worker groups. They maintain that iodomethane presents an “imminent hazard” to human health and the environment and that distribution, sales and use should be suspended immediately. The EPA granted a one-year approval for iodomethane in 2007 ( Agrow No 530, p 20), with an unlimited extension a year later. A lawsuit challenging the approval of iodomethane in California was filed late last year ( Agrow No 607, p 16).
