Bayer seeks Australian OK for GM canola hybrid

Bayer CropScience has applied for Australian approval for genetically modified glufosinate- and glyphosate-tolerant hybrid canola. The InVigor x Roundup Ready canola was produced by conventional breeding of the two GM lines, which were approved individually in 2003 ( Agrow No 434, p 19). Commercialisation of GM canola in Australia was prevented for at least four five years by moratoriums in each of the canola-growing states ( Agrow passim). InVigor canola has never been grown commercially in Australia. Bayer is seeking approval for the new line for all commercial canola-growing areas. The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator expects to issue a risk assessment and management plan for public comment in August.
