Rosetta success for GM drought-resistant potato

Israeli biotechnology company Rosetta Genomics subsidiary Rosetta Green (Rehovot) has developed genetically modified drought-resistant potatoes using microRNA technology. The new potatoes express a microRNA gene, RGN-131, that “significantly improves” the plants ability to withstand and recover from drought conditions. The company has previously demonstrated the role of RGN-131 as a “main bio-switch” in the model plant, thale cress, and will now test it in other crops, including wheat, maize, rice, soybeans and cotton.
