Bayer to buy US soybean seed firm
Bayer CropScience has agreed to acquire the US seed company, Hornbeck Seed (DeWitt, Arkansas), for an undisclosed amount. Hornbeck supplies soybean, rice and wheat seed in the southern US, and it has an in-house soybean breeding programme and proprietary germplasm, Bayer points out. The deal would strengthen Bayer’s position as a soybean seed and trait supplier, complementing its research on herbicide-tolerant and insect- and nematode-resistant lines. Hornbeck’s glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink soybean varieties would continue to be a near-term area of focus for the breeding programme, Bayer notes. The deal is seen as an important step in Bayer achieving an integrated soybean business supplying seed, traits, seed treatments and other crop protection products.
