Illegal pesticide seizures down in Brazil
The Brazilian authorities have seized fewer illegal pesticides in the first 11 weeks of the year, the national agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindag, says. Some 7 tonnes were apprehended, well down on the 11.4 tonnes in the same period last year. Over 31 tonnes were seized in the whole of last year. Since the Sindag-supported national campaign began in 2001, some 400 tonnes had been confiscated to the time of the last report. The contraband market was last year estimated to be worth around $540 million ( Agrow No 590, p 29).
