China/Germany extend pesticide waste project
Representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and the German Agency for International Cooperation signed an agreement to extend a Sino-German pesticide waste management project in Beijing last month. The project began in 2004. Director of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture’s Institute for the control of Agrochemicals, Zhang Yanqiu, said that the project had “laid the foundations for successful disposal of pesticide waste in China”, and that some 1,500 tonnes of pesticide waste in the Chinese provinces of Hubei and Jiangsu had already been safely disposed of during the course of the project. As part of the project, China’s first pesticide waste recycling depot was opened in Xianning, Hubei province, at the end of 2008 ( Agrow No 551, p 21).
